Mary just couldn’t wait to get into the Princess dress that she had requested for her costume at Halloween.
It was so beautiful with long flowing sleeves and the back of the dress trailed on the floor like a magnificent train.
Of course, the dress was about two sizes too big and the matching dress-up shoes were huge on her tiny feet; but that didn’t keep Mary from feeling like the most beautiful princess in the world.
She loved the dress so much that she wore it as often as her (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.) would let her, which was most of the time she wasn’t in school.
She was so excited because this afternoon her very best friends, Jane, Jill and Sally, were coming over to play and she was going to wear her dress and they would all have fun pretending that they lived in a beautiful castle.
Mary got up so early that about an hour before everyone came over, she fell asleep on the couch in her dress and even wearing her dress-up shoes.
Slowly, the room began to glow and a slight breeze began to blow through the room with the scent of roses....
Mary opened her eyes to see a beautiful fairy standing over her as she lay on the couch.....
The fairy asked Mary what was so wonderful about wearing the Princess dress and Mary said...
”Because it makes me feel so special and when Jane, Jill, and Sally are with me, we just get have so much fun together.”
“Would you like to see where a real princess lives?” Asked the fairy.
“Oh, yes” said Mary. “Can Jane, Jill and Sally, come with me?”
“Of course,” smiled the fairy...”Now close your eyes and count to 10 and we will see what happens.”
Mary closed her eyes, took a deep breath and started counting “1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10."
Suddenly, when she opened her eyes... There she was in the most beautiful castle she could have imagined and with her were Jane, Jill and Sally.
They stood in the huge entrance hall looking around them in wonderment at all the beautiful gold, wood, and pictures in the room.
The door at the end of the hall opened and a gracious lady invited them to have tea with the Princess.
Mary, Jane, Jill and Sally, politely walked behind the lady into the drawing room of the castle.
There, near a small table was the Princess. She smiled gently at the girls and invited them to tea....
Of course, being at the age they were, the children did not actually have tea, but rather juice and some delicious cookies.
Mary asked the Princess “What does a Princess do?”
“A Princess is responsible for being sure all the people in her kingdom are watched over and that everyone is taken care of....
She sees to it that everyone has good food and clothing and that they learn to share and get along with each other.
Just like a mother takes care of her family,” the Princess smiled.
“Oh,” said Mary....”I want to be a Princess when I grow up”...
“Perhaps you will,” said the Princess.
“But you must remember that being a Princess means that you learn to share, to be a good friend and to care about everyone around you.”
“I know how to share and I have really good friends and I care about everyone,” said Mary, excitedly...
”Can I be a Princess now!” Just thinking about it made her feel so special.
“Well, in due time”...
”I believe I hear someone calling you, Mary,” and sure enough, in the distance Mary could hear her (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.) calling her name and as she opened her eyes, she saw the most wonderful sight....
Her (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.) was leaning over her as she lay on the couch and gently telling her to wake up. Her (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.) looked just like the beautiful Princess.
Mary exclaimed, ”Oh, (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.), I saw the most beautiful Princess in the whole world and she told me what a Princess had to do.”
“Oh, and just what does a princess do?” (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.) asked.
“Oh (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.), A Princess has to share and be a good friend and take care of everyone.”
“Yeah, (Mommy, Aunt ____, etc.), you must be a Princess because you share and have friends and you take care of the whole family.”
“When I grow up, I want to be a Princess like you.”
Just then, the doorbell rang and Jane,, Jill and Sally, arrived.
Mary was so excited as she told them of her wonderful dream.
